Piano Lessons at Tuneagers

The Piano is one of the most popular and most versatile instruments. It is equally suited for beginners and the most advanced musicians.

The Piano is a fantastic choice for beginner students, whether they are kids or adults!

  • The Piano is relatively easy to start as compared, for example, to the violin. Players don’t need to tune the piano before playing since it requires either periodic tunings by a professional piano tuner, or, as in the case of an electronic keyboard, no tuning at all!

  • Quick, impressive results! Within a couple of lessons, students manage to play basic melodies. These quick early successes are highly motivational!

  • Tone production on the piano/keyboard is “easy”! Fundamentally, you press a key on the keyboard and you will create a tone! Moving a bow across a violin string requires extensive practice to generate a musical tone, rather than a “scratch.” Wind instruments can be even harder to learn.

  • The sound of a keyboard is big and impressive, esp. When played with both hands!

Today’s Pianos and Keyboards
Today’s “pianos” come in several different versions, shapes, and sizes. As the backbone of the piano family, the acoustic upright piano (also called “vertical piano”) is the most well-known type. It is found in many homes and schools all over the world. Wherever music is taught in some formal context, you will likely find an upright piano. Additionally, there is the “grand piano,” a majestic version of the piano that features the strings horizontally and is therefore elongated in shape. The grand piano has much richer and fuller sound than the upright and therefore is found in concert halls and other large music venues.

As an alternative to the acoustic pianos, there are also electronic keyboards–in both upright and grand piano designs. Some of these are very affordable and a great choice for a beginning keyboardists “getting their feet wet” on the piano.

Common Questions about Piano Lessons

  • Most children are ready to begin piano lessons between the ages of 5 and 7, although every child develops at their own pace. Readiness is often more important than age, so factors such as attention span, listening skills, and interest in music are considered when deciding if a child is ready to start.

  • Absolutely! Piano is a wonderful instrument to begin at any age, and many of my students start as adults with little or no previous musical experience. Lessons are tailored to your goals, whether you'd like to play for enjoyment, learn your favourite songs, or develop a deeper understanding of music.

  • Regular access to an instrument is important for making progress between lessons. A full-size digital piano with weighted keys is an excellent option for beginners, while an acoustic piano is also a great choice if you have one available.

  • Lesson lengths can be tailored to suit the student's age, experience, and goals. Most students take either 30-minute or 60-minute lessons.

  • Regular, consistent practice is the key to steady progress. For beginners, even 10–15 minutes a day can make a significant difference, while more experienced students may benefit from longer practice sessions of 30 minutes or more.

  • The time it takes to learn piano varies depending on your goals, practice consistency, and prior experience. Most beginners can start playing simple pieces within a few weeks, while developing strong overall fluency takes several months to years of steady practice.

  • Yes, learning to read music is an important part of piano lessons and is introduced gradually alongside playing. Students build confidence step by step, starting with simple notes and rhythms before progressing to more complex pieces.

  • Yes, students can take graded music exams if they wish, but this is always optional and depends on their goals. There are also opportunities to perform in recitals or informal concerts, which helps build confidence and musical expression.

  • Yes, online piano lessons are available and can be a great option for students living in rural areas, or who have busy schedules. Lessons are delivered in real time with the same structure and personal feedback as in-person teaching.
